Sonic Youth Ditch Major Label For Matador

I think this is like some kind of indie-cred Christmas right here. While we’re constantly nervous about which great indie group will be next to take the plunge into the world of major labels, today’s news has revealed that scene stalwarts Sonic Youth have jumped ship to Matador Records. Score!

“Sonic Youth have signed a deal with independent label Matador for the release of their forthcoming album in 2009. The album, due to be recorded this autumn, will be the band’s first on an independent label since 1988’s ‘Daydream Nation’.”

I think we could use more of these kind of label desertions, I mean for woeful pop acts it could be a total cred-boost. Here’s our fantasy.

50 Cent on Sub Pop.

Michelle Branch on Ed Banger (album produced by Feadz too).

The Jonas Brothers on DFA.
