Scorsese To Unite Pacino and De Niro

While Martin Scorsese’s upcoming George Harrison documentary Living in the Material World: George Harrison continues to build steam, the Director’s other long-gestating music film, an ambitious Frank Sinatra biopic featuring different actors portraying the much-loved music icon at different points in his life, has attracted media attention and the ears of frat boys everywhere after the director unveiled his dream Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin casting. Al Pacino and Robert De Niro respectively.

Speaking with The Hindu while doing the Shutter Island press rounds in India, Scorsese admitted that casting for such an iconic role would be difficult but offered two suggestions that will probably blow up the IMDB forums in the next day or two: “I'[ve] yet to spot the actor who can bring back Frank Sinatra alive on screen. My choice is Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro as Dean Martin.”

The duo have previously appeared in three movies together. Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II (unfortunately they shared no screen time), Michael Mann’s superb Heat and the most recent (and underwhelming) of them all – 2008’s Righteous Kill. Seeing as Pacino looks nothing like Sinatra it’ll be interesting to see how the casting plays out, which, if rumours are to be believed might feature some combination of Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Brad Pitt as younger incarnations of Ol’ Blue Eyes. With Scorsese at the helm, it should be pretty epic either way.
