sass & bide Re-enter BRW’s Young Rich List

Are you ready to feel inadequate? Yesterday BRW launched their annual Young Rich List issue (because what’s better than being young and rich?), with a comprehensive countdown of Australia’s wealthiest people under 40. Young-ish Rich List then. Mining magnate Nathan Tinkler topped all earners with an estimated worth of $1.13 billion while “hedge fund wunderkind” Greg Coffey ($743m) and Glencore CFO Steven Kalmin ($458m) rounded out the “Oprah rich” top three. But who cares about rich people we’ve never heard of?

Following a one year absence thanks to Australia’s “rocky retail climate”, sass & bide’s Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke re-entered the list after Myer bought a 65% stake in their company worth $42.25m. The duo started by selling distressed denim on London’s Portobello Road so this is both a literal and metaphorical rags to riches story. We feel warmth emanating from somewhere in our chest area. Other notables include yet another Brisbane duo who could stack paper to the moon and back (if you’ll be, if you’ll be my baby). Yep, in spite of disbanding a decade ago and doing absolutely nothing of note since, Savage Garden’s Daniels Jones and Darren Hayes are still worth $26m – each. The duo owe their wealth to the worldwide success of just two albums, Savage Garden (1997) and Affirmation (1999), which sold a collective 23 million units and 15 million singles. Truly, madly, deeply, insanely rich. We’ve never felt more disgusted with our deplorable non-billionaire lifestyles.
