RIP DJ Mehdi

DJ Mehdi, real name Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, died at 34 years of age last night following an “accident” when his roof collapsed. The news first surfaced when DJ Cut Killer tweeted: “DJ Mehdi !!! There are no words to tell you the sorrow which I feel… A friend goes from there… Rest in peace fréro.”. Condolences from his contemporaries soon followed, confirming the tragedy.

Chromeo tweeted: “We lost our brother.. No words.”, A-Trak: “I have no words. My heart is completely shattered. Not this.”, Digitalism: “Shit this feels like close family has gone. Can’t believe this Mehdi!!!”, Drake: “Damn…RIP MEHDI”, Diplo: “Sitting in a chair crying. My hearts broken.”, Mr Oizo: “saddest news ever I have no words”, Uffie: “I’m so sad I couldn’t be at the hospital with the rest of the crew to see you face one last time…Life won’t be the same without you in it.”, Classixx: “Rip Mehdi. Dj MEHDI .The void he has left behind is unbearable.” The most bittersweet tweet came from Carte Blanche partner Riton who emphasized his friend’s positive life outlook: “just want everyone to know that we were all laughing our assess off 1/2 second before the accident and simon alegia and louise are all well”.

Known for bridging the gap between electro, bass music and hip hop, Mehdi shot to fame with the release of 2006’s Lucky Boy on French imprint Ed Banger. He was slated to play next year’s Summadayze festival and is survived by his wife Fafi a prominent French street artist and their six year old son Neil.
