Rihanna Enters Tearful, Patriotic Ballad Mode With ‘American Oxygen’

Come album release time, all Rihanna really needs to do is put out a couple of bangers, maybe with a Sia ballad or a Coldplay collaboration mixed in there for good measure, then boom, done, she’s onto the next one.

This formula, or some very slight variation of it, has seen Bad Gal Riri through seven full-length albums and 40 singles, give or take, over the last decade. When you’re onto a good thing, why stuff it up by messing with it?
In the lead-up to her eighth studio album, Rih has decided to shake shit up.
First, we got the acoustic, double denim-clad Paul McCartney and Kanye collaboration that was ‘Four Five Seconds’. Then came ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’, which was released via an app whose name you’ve probably already forgotten.
Now, in short order, comes ‘American Oxygen’, a weepy, patriotic ballad about striving for the American dream and sweating for nickels and dimes. Rih debuted said song during her recent March Madness performance in Indiana.
The fact that said March Madness performance took place on April 4 is probably the least confusing part of all this. Watch her star-spangled performance below:
‘American Oxygen’ is likely to be the third single from Rihanna’s upcoming eighth album.
