Wow, simply fucking gorgeous on all fronts this is. Aussie thespians on the rise, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Sophie Lowe, best known as the eponymous temptress in 2009’s award winning Beautiful Kate, star in the Hugo O’Connor directed video for “Eli” by singer-songwriter Lincoln Davis and Sydney-producer/remixer extraordinaire Mailer Daemon.
Totally enamoured with Davis’ beguiling vocal style and somewhat meandering guitar work – the perfect foil for Mailer Daemon’s dubby-as-hell riddims and strategically placed doom stabs, which is to say, the pair have that airy/dense dichotomy down pat. The clip is just as bouyant but also has this vaguely unsettling Heavenly Creatures vibe running underfoot. To wit, Debnam-Carey and Lowe burn items of clothing, cavort around in the woods, bury some unnamed object (or body part?), trawl op-shops, scream at each other and switch between luminosity and longing in a clip that’s more about mood than narrative. Probably the best thing you’ll see/hear all day.
