Premiere: Jinja Safari – “Head In A Blender”

For the past few months Jinja Safari have drip-fed tracks from their new EP Mermaids & Other Sirens with aims to release a track every month til its release in August. Today we have the pleasure of premiering the Sydney quintet’s third jam, “Head In A Blender”, which you can now download here or stream below.

Head In a Blender by JinjaSafari

For contextual reasons we asked founding members Marcus and Pepa to answer a few quick questions about weddings, spiritual homes and cows…

Pedestrian: Where did the idea for “Head In A Blender” come from?
Pepa: It about when we were shooting the film clip for “Peter Pan”, deep down in a forest in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Marcus and I had 2 acoustic guitars and wanted to write a song in a 9/8 time signature.
Marcus: I wrote some lyrics to this song in a field at Crescent Head (Central Coast of NSW), after the wedding of one of our good friends. This place holds a fair bit of significance to our band, as this is where we first jammed and subsequently recorded some of the sounds in this song almost a year later.

Pedestrian: What do you think of when you hear this song?
Marcus: The lyrics came about after the wedding ceremony, it had been a long day of dancing, picnicking, and nude running. At the end of the night, everyone had a bit to drink, and rode bikes down to the river. I stayed back at the farm, and walked out into the paddock, under the tree where they were married. It was a warm night, and the festival lights hanging off the tree were slowly dying, someone had left an acoustic guitar in the grass. I played for a few hours by myself, and had a cow and a few possums walk right up to me to inspect the racket. I had just shaved my hair into a mohawk, so I felt a bit wild in the full moon.

Pedestrian: Can you describe the recording process?
Marcus: We have an eclectic non-specific writing process; which is actually less of a structured process and more of kindergarten style macaroni noodle picture that we stick together for our mums and managers to put up on the fridge.
Pepa: “…And to finish the recording, we went back to Crescent Head and recorded our friends stomping on gravel, which you can hear in the beginning of the song.”
