We blogged about a forthcoming NWA biopic over a year ago and though details have remained scant ever since, it has been recently announced that Andrea Berloff, the scribe responsible for Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, will pen the script.
Appropriately dubbed Straight Outta Compton, the biopic will follow Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella as they “grapple with violence, charges of anti-Semitism, misogyny and homophobia”, shift 9 million units, transform into one of hip-hop’s most seminal outfits and piss off the FBI.
The film is being produced by Ice Cube as well as Tomika Woods (Eazy-E’s widow) so whether you harbour concerns over the biopic’s authenticity or not, just thank God we can say the words “Ice Cube” and “film” without the caveat “eye bleedingly banal family comedy”. Are we done yet? Yep.
