Notice Anything Weird About Lady Gaga On Her ARTPOP Album Cover?

Everyone’s favourite weird-for-the-sake-of-weird pop culture phenomenon Lady Gaga has just released the artwork for upcoming third album/app/art experience/thing ARTPOP… and it’s actually pretty cool.

But there is definitely something a little out of the ordinary about it.
She’s naked, which in 2013 is nothing new for female pop stars, especially LG. It’s got a little bit of a late eighties/early nineties neon colour vibe going for it as well, which again, is so hot right now. And of course it has Gaga front and centre, just like the covers for her previous albums The Fame and Born This Way.
So all seems to be in order so far, but the thing about Gaga on the
cover of ARTPOP is that it ain’t the real Gaga – it’s a hyper-real
sculpture by contemporary artist Jeff Koons (that’d be the Koons she’s referring to in the above tweet, and the quote is a prophetic line taken from the album’s first single Applause.) Gaga is evidently a pretty big Koons fan, calling him “A pure and genuine collaborator” in an earlier tweet.

Lady G unveiled the artwork earlier today on Twitter, and it was simultaneously displayed on digital billboards all over the world. She also tweeted that the sculpture will be on display at the ARTPOP launch on November 10:

You can see a real, non-sculpted Gaga make her big screen debut as Lady Chameleon in Robert Rodriguez‘s schlockfest sequel Machete Kills on October 11. In the meantime, try to decipher what the fuck is going on in her Applause video below.
