Mix Tape Of Icelandic Tunes Inspired By Volcanic Ash

Eyjafjallajokull, better known as The Iceland Volcano, continues to spew dense volcanic ash into the atmosphere causing havoc in the skies, and resulting in the forced cancellation of hundreds of flights out of Scottish and Irish airports.

If you’re stuck in an airport cursing Eyjafjallajokull and its smoke puffery and ash spewery, here is a list of great Icelandic songs to help get you through the wait.

Sugarcubes – “Hit”
Great track from the rather fabulous 1980s-90s alt rock band with an amazing lead singer.

Emiliana Torrini – “Heartstopper”
An overtly sentimental track from the pretty-voiced and pretty-faced songstress. The clip has cool puppets too.

Ólafur Arnalds – “3055”
Haunting, transcendent tune from a pretty remarkable composer. Beautiful.

Björk – “All Is Full Of Love”
Amazing Björk song that was a difficult selection amongst the endless goodness in her catalogue. It’s hard to beat this romantic/creepy video about robot love by Michel Gondry Chris Cunningham though…

Sigur Rós – “Olsen Olsen”
Impossibly beautiful, heart wrenching beast of a track, from the band that sounds like you think Iceland must look like.

Múm – “Green Grass Of Tunnel”
Lovely dreamy tune from one of Iceland’s finest – and possibly most underrated – bands.

Seabear – “Teenage Kicks”
Very good indie folk band covering one of the all time great tunes: The Undertones “Teenage Kicks” with some sick xylophone action.

FM Belfast – “Synthia”
Kickin lo-fi, Eighties-style synth pop from one of the best Icelandic bands going. Dance if you feel the need.
