To commemorate Nevermind’s 20th anniversary (wow let me adjust my oxygen tank for a minute) Spin have released a free tribute album called Newermind. Download it for a “like” at Spin’s Facebook page then listen to contemporary acts such as Titus Andronicus, The Vaselines, Surfer Blood and Aussie trio Midnight Juggernauts cover each track on the album. “The one time they came to Australia,” recounts Juggernauts frontman Vincent, “I passed a record store where Kurt was being interviewed with a big crowd watching. It was hugely powerful for a ten-year-old to see.” You can reverse engineer Vincent’s age from this but I guess the most pertinent takeaway is Nirvana’s impact on both music lovers and those they encountered tangentially along the way.
