Mercury Prize Shortlist

For those who don’t know, the Mercury Prize is an annual music prize awarded to the best album in The United Kingdom and Ireland. It carries more credibility than your standard music award so think of it as an ARIA but way less shit. To put it another way, Seany B ain’t winning one anytime soon…

The Shortlist for 2008 is as follows:

Adele – 19
British Sea Power – Do You Like Rock Music?
Burial – Untrue
Elbow – The Seldom Seen Kid
Estelle – Shine
Laura Marling – Alas, I Cannot Swim
Neon Neon – Stainless Style
Portico Quartet – Knee Deep In The North Sea
Rachel Unthank and the Winterset – The Bairns
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Raising Sand
The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of the Understatement

2007 saw Klaxons take out the Mercury Prize while in 2006 it was Arctice Monekys who walked away with the award. There doesn’t seem to be a band of that ilk (read: mega-hyped) this year so I’m thinking it will be a close race between Radiohead (who have been nominated three time previously) and Alex Turner’s side project The Last Shadow Puppets.
