A Melb Pub Is Saluting 20 Years Of Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’ By Playing It All Night Long

On May 4th, 1999, Californian band Smash Mouth – who at that point in their burgeoning career had a couple of minor hits under their belt – unleashed unto the world a song called All Star, the second single off their soon-to-be released second album Astro Lounge. Despite being a massive hit in its own right, it wasn’t until the song was shoved into the opening scenes of 2001’s Shrek that it cannoned off into the stratosphere as one of the all-time great bangers.

This weekend, in celebration of 20 years with All Star bouncing about the world, a Melbourne bar is set to pay tribute to the song by playing it.

On repeat.

All fucken night long.

Stay Gold in the inner-northern suburb of Brunswick is set to host what they’re billing as a Smash Mouth ‘All Star’ Appreciation Night tomorrow night.

The event description for this momentous date reads quite simply: “One USB. One song. One night.”

As in, they’re gonna plug a USB stick containing All Star and only All Star into the mixing desk, and they’re gonna leave that bad boy on repeat for as long as the night lasts.

That’s all the night is. You, a room full of strangers, all belting out All Star well into the good night.

Venue management has assured me that *occasionally* they’ll sneak in a non-All Star song, just to avoid the entire place devolving into John Mulaney Salt & Pepper Diner-style anarchy.

But by and large, it’s Smash Mouth’s 1999 smash hit single All Star as loud as you can handle it, all night long.

Wild scenes.

If that kind of party sounds like your jam, and you’re keen to see some years start coming and refuse to yield, the event kicks off at 11pm Saturday night (enough time to get a real long run up) and continues well into the wee hours of Sunday.

You can find all the vital details via the Facebook event page.

Now if they’ve got the guts to drop the Neil Cicierega Mouth Pressure mashup, it’ll really be a noteworthy night.
