Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ ‘Thrift Shop’ Tops Triple J’s Hottest 100

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘ ‘Thrift Shop‘ – not Gangnam Style, as teased by those wily triple J dee-jayz – has taken out the number one spot in the world’s largest democratic music poll, the 20th Annual triple j Hottest 100, to the surprise of no one and the delirious glee of those who had prepared victory posts well in advance [that definitely aren’t this one].

In other related news, ’tis the year of Flume, and the monsoon of ‘adoration’ which is about to come down thick and fast on him from any and all directions.
The people’s song:
Speaking to this generation’s love of thrifting (?) – or perhaps more accurately, their love of a fkn awesome time, amirite?! – the duo’s cross-over jam paired nicely with their paean to equality, ‘Same Love’, which entered the countdown at #15 and is currently the No.1 song in Australia; a neat metaphor for their relatively sudden rise from obscurity despite having been active since the early noughties, and hopefully also testament to the growing popularity of #equality in the hundreds of thousands of young people whose 1.5 million votes comprised in the Hottest 100.
That might be a bit hopeful, but it’s ’bout time.
UPDATED: In the post-revelation interview, the very recently affianced Macklemore told Tom & Alex the honour was “very overwhelming and awesome” and attributed the song’s popularity to it’s liberal use of sax. Yes, that’s definitely it. Sax sells.
Notable high-charting Australian tips of the hat – in keeping with both the day and the station’s patriotic ethos – go to the aforementioned Flume, who made four appearances (#67 ‘On Top’, #18 remix of ‘HyperParadise’ and #12 for ‘Sleepless’, so kudos Warmest 100 and #4 for ‘Holdin On’); Unearthed alum The Rubens, who cracked the Top 10 with ‘My Gun’; Tame Impala’s ‘Feel Like We Only Go Backwards’ and ‘Elephant’, which landed the band their sixth and highest Hottest 100 entries at #9 and #8 on both Hottest and Warmest charts.
That aside, we didn’t do too badly after all.
