5SOS’s Luke Hemmings Has Gone Solo & Dropped A Dreamy First Single For Yr Ear Holes’ Pleasure

Another member of 5 Seconds Of Summer has ventured out with a solo project, this time coming from Luke Hemmings. Yep, the lead singer of the 5SOS juggernaut has announced his debut album sans-band, and served up the first taste of the incoming record.

Luke dropped ‘Starting Line‘ on Wednesday, the first official single of the project, and confirmed that his debut solo record, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From, will be in our hot little hands on August 13. That’s so soon.

Luke also said this entire album was written and recorded during the lockdowns of 2020 – a time he recognised as “enforced stillness” – and judging from this first single, the whole thing is going to hit right in the sweet spot for both 5SOS and indie pop fans.

Starting Line‘ begins with delicate, flittering piano backing Luke’s gentle vocals, before swelling into an energetic and rolling track, setting the bar for the energy and scope we’re likely going to hear from the 5SOS frontman on this new venture.

Lyrically, Luke found he was using a lot of that forced stillness to reflect on his life so far, and realised he had to try and fill in a lot of the gaps when memories became hazy or muddled.

Starting Line discusses missing various memories,” Luke said in a statement.

“You’re reflecting on your youth and all of the madness and craziness. It’s like you’re forgetting so many pieces of your life—not from vices or anything—but from the sheer volume.

“I had to figure out how to fill a lot of gaps for myself in a positive way. It’s the human condition to change everything up after so long.”

Luke isn’t the first one of the 5SOS gang to step out on his own, with drummer and bandmate Ashton Irwin using all the sudden downtime on his hands to be creative, and released his own album – Superbloom – in late 2020.

When Facing The Things We Turn Away From is due to be released on August 13, and you can pre-order and pre-save it right here.
