Lorde’s Letter About Turning 20 & Her New Album Is Basically Goddamn Poetry

That wistful but somewhat nervously exciting moment that you finish your teenagehood and turn 20 is one of great importance for many.
For most of us, it’s because we know that our time in which we can do stupid shit and get drunk and have no hangover the next day and make dumb mistakes and have people blame our idiocy on our age is coming to a terrifying close. It means soon, we will be expected to grow up.
But for Lorde, this means a massive change in her music and therefore, her career.
The singer posted a lengthy letter to her fans on her Facebook page literally as she turned 20 years old – near the letter’s end, she interrupts her own thoughts to state ‘Oh my god it’s midnight now!!! I’m 20 fuck!!!!!’ – explaining that her music was largely inspired by teenagers.
She explains,
“All my life I’ve been obsessed with adolescence, drunk on it. Even when I was little, I knew that teenagers sparkled. I knew they knew something children didn’t know, and adults ended up forgetting.

Since 13 I’ve spent my life building this giant teenage museum, mausoleum maybe, dutifully wolfishly writing every moment down, and repeating it all back like folklore. And now there isn’t any more of it.

[…] Writing ‘Pure Heroine’ was my way of enshrining our teenage glory, putting it up in lights forever so that part of me never dies.”
HOWEVER. The insanely eloquent singer goes on to explain that she’s put effort into growing up in order to write her next record – a record that we hadn’t heard about until this moment (!!!).
“Sometime in the last year or so, part of me crossed over. For one thing, I made a very deliberate choice to withdraw for a little while from a public life.

My heart broke. I moved out of home and into the city and I made new friends and started to realize that no-one is just good or bad, that everyone is both. I started to discover in a profound, scary, blood-aching way who I was when I was alone.

[…] I was reckless and graceless and terrifying and tender. I threw sprawling parties and sat in restaurants until the early hours, learning what it’s like to be an adult, even talking like one sometimes, until I caught myself.

[…] And then I wrote a record about it, all of it, so much more than what I’ve written down here, and I’m in new york getting it done.”
Read the whole post below, and weep at its beauty and perfection:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LORDE, YOU PERFECT ANGEL FROM HEAVEN!
p.s. Let’s also just really think about the fact that she wrote ‘Pure Heroine’ when she was SIXTEEN YEARS OLD. That’s MENTAL.
