Eclectic though they may be, UK four-piece Late Of The Pier’s one constant is a penchant for heavy-handed sonic flourishes. You know, noodling hair metal riffs, face-melting synth lines and the like. Perhaps that’s why I find “Blueberry” the first single from their forthcoming “Blueberry Pie” (no relation to Strawberry Jam) such a revelation.
Out with the trapeze acts and circus noises and in with a sleepy half tempo plonker and lead singer Sam Eastgate in full croon mode. That is until the three minute mark. Then shit gets weird.
