L D R U Went To A Nude Party At The Minecraft Creator’s $70M Mansion

If you’ve been listening to Triple J at all over the past few weeks, you’ll have heard L D R U‘s ‘Next To You’ – and you’ll probably have heard it a lot. After we premiered it on PEDESTRIAN.TV, the producer (real name Drew Carmody) has been on the up and up, his summery bangers getting stacks of airplay. He’s debuting the music video for ‘Next To You’ today.
Peep this – it’s totally insane and weird and we like it a lot:
We sat down to get to know L D R U a little better – and what better way to get to know an artist than finding out what tunes are rattling around their head right now. The shit they like, the shit they used to like, and the shit they’ve just started hearing. Drew was kind enough to throw us together a playlist and give us the lowdown on what he’s been listening to. And yeah, that Minecraft yarn.
THUNDERSTRUCK – AC/DC

Oooh yeah. Choon and a half. I like the Aussie kind of stuff. I saw them a little while ago, at the arena. I think I still have the ticket in my jacket pocket, actually. [He did.]

WHAT YOU DESIRE – DAGGY MAN

I heard that the other night, on Kingsmill’s Sunday night show. First time I’ve ever heard it. I think he had a few projects before Daggy Man. It clicked with me instantly – it’s a really nice, emotional tune. The melodies are great. It’s all acoustic: it’s him, his voice and the guitar. Sounds really cool.

THE TROPICS – L D R U

I try to focus on listening to anything but my own stuff, because I’m always thinking about my stuff when I’m writing it. This was my breakthrough song. Future Classic picked that up and released it on their label, which was really cool. That song was kinda inspired by Flume, it fits in his genre from when he first broke through in the Australian scene. That’s when I first started producing, actually. Thought I’d try to make something around that kind of vibe. Just mucking around. He put it in his BBC 6 mix, and then Future Classic picked it up.

LOSE YOURSELF – EMINEM

This is from when I was in primary school, when gelled fringes were in. When the movie ‘8 Mile’ came out… that was a great movie. Life-changing. I still definitely listen to a little bit of hip hop. Like Trinidad James, who we’re working with.

DELETE – DMA’S

Alison Wonderland posted about them – that’s how I found the track. It’s like an Oasis-type vibe… wait, not Oasis. What’s that song that’s on ‘The O.C.’? About California? [It’s Phantom Planet]. Great show, great song.

EPIKUR – DAVID AUGUST

Oh, dude. That track is a journey. Journey and a half. We were late for one of our shows in Townsville, and we had to hire a private jet. It was the only way we could make it there on time. We all jumped on the plane, got super drunk. We had one of those adaptors, where you can fit like five different headphones. We all had a silent disco, and that was the first song that came on. Everyone was just losing it.

KEEPING SCORE – L D R U

This is probably my second breakthrough track – the one that actually crossed over to commercial radio. Pretty cool. Went platinum, which I didn’t think would ever happen. Got a plaque on my wall now. Love the feel and the vibes from it. Makes you wanna rock out and dance. I’m definitely wanting to go a little more in the pop world, but not too mainstream. I just love working with amazing vocalists.

WORKING FOR IT – ZHU FEAT. SKRILLEX, THEY

All time favourite. Love it. Best party jam, makes me wanna have a beer every time I hear it. My favourite beer is VB. Love Skrillex – he’s a very cool dude, very humble. Love how he’s such a hardworking guy. He’s got so much time for other artists on the roster and the people around him. We did a radio show in Malibu with him, and I hung out with him there a little bit.

SHOOK ONES PT. II – MOB DEEP

An old school one. A favourite from that era of hip hop. Love the melodies, the lyrics, the whole track pretty much. Thought I’d throw that one in for ya.

TELL US ONE COOL YARN FROM YOUR TOUR?

When we were in L.A, we got invited to a party with the guy that created Minecraft. So we went back to his house. It’s crazy. Probably one of the best houses I’ve ever seen. Someone said it was worth $75 million. He had naked ladies walking around serving drinks. Huge dancefloor. The house was so big that it was divided into sectors. Sector 1 all the way up to 15. You’d get lost. Massive party, heaps of people – probably about 500. Everyone started getting nude swimming in the pool. Minecraft money. There were heaps of myths that he was there, then people said he wasn’t there. Then I heard he threw the party because he had too much money and he needed to be under a certain tax threshold.

N-n-nice. L D R U is heading ’round the country before he shows up at Splendour – tour dates below.

Saturday July 2nd // Oxford Art Factory – Sydney
Friday July 8th // Villa – Perth

Saturday July 9th // Fat Controller – Adelaide

Friday July 15th // Triffid – Brisbane

Saturday July 16th // Northcote Social Club – Melbourne
