Triple J’s Hottest 100 is an Australian music tradition up there with claiming New Zealand talent as our own and hating successful people. Thanks to this democratic ‘lil slice of the Australian music zeitgeist songs such as The Living End’s “Prisoner of Society” sound-tracked by faux-rebellious youth. One decade later, I can only hope that teens still have songs that make them feel things – even if they don’t quite understand what they are.
This year’s top song Kings Of Leon’s “Sex On Fire” is also the most horribly titled song of the year and the number one euphemism for a burning crotch. Closer to home, The Presets and Empire Of The Sun were the highest placed Aussies proving that electro is firmly entrenched in the mainstream. The neon writing’s been on the wall on the chest of shirtless festival goers for quite some time now.
