Next time Phoenix tour Australia they should bring along a full backing choir – and we know the right crew for the job: the PS22 childrens choir.
Led by the choirmaster Gregg (who goes by stage name Mr B), the PS22 kids have become a youtube phenomenon with their pre-adolescent four-part harmonies and choral reinterpretations of popular indie tunes and rock classics – and the fact that they are gosh-darn, cheek-pinching cute doesn’t hurt either. They’ve not only become a mega hit with average internet-users – they’ve also scored firsthand props from Ashton Kutcher, Alyssa Milano, David Hasselhoff, as well as people that actually matter like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Stevie Nicks and Alicia Keys.
Their latest sensation is a reworking of Phoenix track “Lisztomania”, and upon discovering the cover Phoenix were so impressed that they posted the video on their blog under the category “Songs That Make You Cry”. Such was the impact of PS22’s cover that Phoenix’s manager Simon White actually wrote the following letter to them:
“Hi There. I’m one of Phoenix’s managers and just wanted to say how much we all loved the performance of Lisztomania. I wept within the first 30 seconds! It’s absolutely stunning, the arrangement is fantastic and the singing is just incredible.
The band and I were absolutely blown away – WOW!!!!
It’s an absolutely astonishing version and definitely my favourite “remix” of any of their songs. Please give the chorus our best wishes and sincere thanks.
