Kele Says New Bloc Party Album Due Out This Year

After holding their collective breaths for two years, Bloc Party fans can finally exhale now that front man Kele Okereke confirmed the band are releasing a new album in 2012.

Despite an extended touring hiatus and rumours that the group were disbanding, Kele has told Radio 1’s Zane Lowe that the quartet have recorded two new songs and demoed 17 more, and hinted at the pending record’s sound – a possible return to their indie-rock beginnings?

“It’s nice to feel that the music we’re making is the sound of all us in a room together again because we haven’t done that for a while. We’ve all felt that whatever energy was there in the beginning was definitely still there. That’s the reason for making the record again.”

He said, “I think the people that will be into indie music now will be the people that love it. That’s somewhat liberating. We can do whatever we want now and people will come to it on its own terms. I’m excited about the idea of making rock music again.”

Sounds promising!

The last time we chatted with Kele he was in Australia for last year’s Splendour In The Grass, and at the time he was working on a collection of fictional short stories – perhaps some other new material of sorts to look forward to later in the year. You can watch him talk about it in the clip below…

He also discussed how he enjoys walking around his apartment naked. Swoon Town.
