Kanye West Has Announced That He’ll Be Going By The Name Ye Now

It’s shaping up to be a big weekend for Kanye West – with an upcoming performance on the Season 44 premiere of Saturday Night Live, and a new album rumoured to be arriving at the same time, the rapper has made the surprise announcement that he is changing his name, and will henceforth be known as Ye.

He made the announcement on Twitter, where he addressed himself as “the being formally known as Kanye West”, presumably in a nod to Prince. In the ’90s, the music superstar changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol as an act of rebellion against his record label, and started going by “the artist formerly known as Prince.”

Kanye has gone by the nickname Ye for a while now, and it’s unclear if this name change is permanent or if he’ll be releasing music under that name or what, but his social media accounts have been updated, and here we all are, I guess.

The performer will be appearing on SNL in a few hours, along with host Adam Driver. It was revealed yesterday that he was stepping in to replace the previous musical guest, Ariana Grande, who pulled out at the last minute due to “emotional reasons.”
