Jared Leto Gave A Powerful VMAs Tribute To Chris Cornell & Chester Bennington

Amidst the glitz, glamour, and celebration of today’s on-going MTV VMAs ceremony in Los Angeles, proceedings paused momentarily to pay tribute to two of the industry’s greats in Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, who both sadly passed away earlier this year.

MTV brought Jared Leto on-stage to give a touching tribute to both men, noting his close friendship with each man having toured with them in the past.

Of Bennington, Leto spoke gently of his close mate, stating that he was “precocious, full of life, and determined.”

When I talk about him, I see his face, which was always smiling. I think about his heart, which he wore on his sleeve. I think how kindly he treated me…and I remember his voice. At once ferocious and delicate, that voice will live forever.

Leto also remarked how Bennington had sung at Cornell’s funeral service, which took place only a short handful of weeks before Bennington’s untimely passing in late July.

They were close friends with one another. Chester even singing the cover of the classic ‘Hallelujah’ at Chris’ funeral. Chester said of Chris, ‘Your voice was joy and pain and anger and forgiveness, love and heartache, all wrapped up into one.’ Just weeks later, Chester himself was gone. Chester was my friend. As he was to so many. Witnessing his life taught me important things. Especially about working relentlessly, pursuing dreams, and being kind and caring while doing it.

And perhaps most fittingly and importantly of all, Leto took the time to close his monologue by reaching out to people watching at home, urging those who may be struggling with mental health to not give up.

If there is anyone out there who is watching this tonight, who feels like there is no hope, hear me now,” Leto said. “You are not alone. There is always a way forward. Reach out, share your thoughts, do not give up, and, I promise you this: The absolute biggest breakthroughs in life lay just beyond the darkest days.

Linkin Park then took the stage after Leto’s words to perform in honour of the late stars.
