Japanese Wallpaper Covered The ‘O.C.’ Theme Song For Like A Version & We’re Cohen Nuts

It’s here, it’s the good day once again, friends. It’s Friday and that means we’re not only staring down the barrel of the weekend, but it’s a spring weekend and it’s Like A Version day. This week, Japanese Wallpaper took an iconic mid-00s classic and theme to pretty much everyone’s teen summer and turned it into a shimmery 2019 redux.

Yep, that’s right it’s a whole-ass version Phantom Planet‘s ‘California’, and holy shit Christmakkuh’s come early with this one, because it’s making me want to immediately bail on work and drive to the beach.

Swinging in with a very heavy Cali accent (bless), Gab Strum – the main brains behind Japanese Wallpaper – creates a hazy, glittering aura that makes you wish it were the thick of summer and you were lazily road-tripping down the coast with all the windows down.

Considering Japanese Wallpaper has probably featured in the most Like A Versions ever (seriously, can someone please check how many he’s been in?) it’s so good to see the Unearthed High alum take to the spotlight and firmly lock himself a spot in my demanded 2019 Like A Version Compilation CD (aka The Longest-Ever Highlights Mix CD Ever.)

Check out the frankly beautiful rendition of the classic jam/theme for The O.C., and although it’s hard to beat OG Phantom Planet drummer Jason Schwartzman, which I can forgive, it’s still very bloody good.

Fingers crossed he’ll pull this one out on his US run with Allday and Mallrat, and then when he comes back to Aus later in the year for his own headline tour.

Happy Friday, take over the speakers in your house/office/school/work, and play this on a constant loop.
