J AWARDS: D.D Dumbo, Tash Sultana & King Gizz Picked As ‘Straya’s Best

D.D Dumbo’s Utopia Defeated has just taken out Triple J’s J Award for Australian Album of the Year, joining inarguably great records from the likes of Tame Impala, Gotye and Courtney Barnett.

At once familiar and innovative, ol’ mate Dumbo – real name Oliver Hugh Perry – was honoured for conjuring a wealth of disparate tones into a cohesive and damn catchy full-length.

The J’s head honcho Richard Kingsmill reckons “he’s created a sound that is incredibly striking. It’s strong in both its vision and quality, and in a huge year for Australian releases, it also stood out for its inventiveness.”

Our take: yeah, it’s good.

If you were lucky enough to have ambled down Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall at any stage in 2015, you probably caught Tash Sultana absolutely goddamn wailing on her guitar.

If you caught her tunes at all, you probably wondered about her unexpected absence too. Welp, turns out she’s been crushing it on Triple J Unearthed, and she’s just been awarded Artist of the Year. Well goddamn deserved.
On a slightly more eclectic note (read: a baffling but hypnotic collection of notes), King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard took Double J’s Australian Artist of the Year. They also clocked Australian Music Video of the Year for the objectively nutso People Vultures.
Clock all of the you beaut nominees right bloody here, ’cause Australian music is great, and if you’re not about it, you’re a gronk.
