IVEY’s Millie Perks Explains How She Became An Introvert-Turned-Extrovert

Alright, everyone shut their face for a second and listen to this entire Spotify playlist right now:

Spotify and Jack Daniel’s have recently curated a stacked 99-song playlist filled exclusively with local Aussie talent, and there are some certified bangers in there – trust me, I dedicated over 300 minutes to this.

I know what I’m talking about.

PEDESTRIAN.TV recently chatted to one of the musicians featured in The Local List playlist – Millie Perks from Gold Coast five-piece IVEY.

Joining Lachie, Matthew, Dante and Riley as the band’s lead singer when she was just 12 years old (do not even get me started), Millie has been playing with IVEY for over a third of her life.

“To be honest, I just sort of got pushed into it…I’m like an introvert that has been forced to be an extrovert,” Millie says.

Now look, I consider myself to be somewhat of an extrovert, but just the idea of standing up on stage in front of countless people and belting out a tune gives me mad knee-sweats.

The girl’s got guts.

When asked about the transition from introvert and extrovert, Millie suggests it was as simple as her bandmates saying, “Oh you can sing, Millie you’re in the band now.”

“The boys have always been super supportive of me and also, really, really pushed me as well. But the first three-or-so years I just did not move onstage, I just stayed in my little bubble.”

Here’s another little tidbit that blows my extroverted-but-not-really mind: “We played a show with British India and it was such a big crowd that I just kind of let loose and did it.”

“I know that I perform so much better when it’s a big crowd because it hypes me up a little bit.”

Yeah nah, not once has a bigger crowd made anyone I know less nervous. Again, the guts shown is astounding.

IVEY just finished supporting Lime Cordiale on their national Robbery Tour, and are currently gearing up for their third annual End Of Year party.

“[Our first two EOY parties] were pretty crazy…we had a big line-up of bands and DJs and stuff like that. This year we’ve got a couple of special guests which is super exciting.”

The special guests are still guarded under lock-and-key, but if video evidence is anything to go by, the End Of Year parties look hectic enough to warrant a visit regardless of who’s showing up. Observe:

If you pay close attention around the 0:52 mark, you’ll notice that Millie essentially gets flung into the crowd with as much force as possible. If you thought it looked painful, think again.

“No, I was fine. I was all good. I didn’t really realise that they did that but they full-on grabbed my leg and just flung me into the crowd, I was like, ‘What’s going on?’. It didn’t hurt, it was fine.”

For such young, relatively new talent, it seems that IVEY has far more experience than their similarly-aged peers.

If it wasn’t for overhearing who I can only assume was Millie’s Mum in the background, I’d forget I was talking to a musician who only just graduated high school.

Despite the envy-inducing confidence, Millie and her fellow bandmates seem more than aware that they have to keep working their asses off to get to Splendour-headlining levels.

“I suppose we’re not really going to stop – we don’t want to. We’re going to go for as long as we can and get as big as we can, really,” Millie says matter-of-factly.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be at the front row with a Jack Daniel’s in hand.

I never thought I’d be jelly of 19-year-old’s self-confidence but here we are.
