Interview With Yolanda Be Cool – Remix To Win

Spank Records’ competition to find the best unsigned remix legend in Australia closes this Friday the 30th of May at 11.59pm EST. The winner will score a $5,000 prize pack – plus (and most importantly) the opportunity to get your fine skills heard by as many ears possible. Remix the new single from Sweat It Out! artists DCUP and Yolanda Be Cool, “We No Speak Americano”, any which way but shit, and you’re in with a chance. You can download it for free as well as get all the competition details at the Spank Records website.

One half of Yolanda Be Cool, Johnson Peterson, took some time out to chat to Pedestrian about their upcoming European tour, non-existent bags of gold, and the most exciting producers on the Australian club scene at the moment…

Yolanda Be Cool is blowing up on the club scene at the moment. How’s it going? Have you had any significant life changes or bags of gold being thrown at you yet? Hahaha yeah. Well we are pretty stoked with the whole thing and how things are going. I guess the thing that we [Yolanda Be Cool] and DCUP are both so happy about with the success of “Americano” is that we didn’t at all set out to have any commercial/pop success. We just wanted to make a fun party track that people would play and that techno people wouldn’t hate us for. In terms of bags of gold… unfortunately those days are well over in the music “biz” but we are not complaining. Our gigs have all been full, so that’s been amazing.

Have you heard any of the remixes that have been done for the comp? What are they like? – Is it weird having your track changed around? Yeah! We have heard a few and been extremely impressed with the standard. The Vhyce one – which was commissioned by the label – is massive and we have been playing that a lot but there are a stack of others worth mentioning also. Having the track rearranged and changed around is not weird but really quite interesting to hear other people’s take on a track you made.

Who are some Australian or international djs and producers that have caught your eye lately? In Australia Playmode is definitely one to watch. I think this could be his year. So is Pow Pow, Act Yo Age, Mat Cant, Flight Facilities for sure… Overseas, Vhyce is going to be massive no doubt. French Fries, Monkey Safari, Daniel Steinberg is our hero. I could go on…. Okay: all the Deadfish Crew. Hickup is going to be big…

You’re touring Europe in June. What are you most excited about? Pretty much excited about the whole thing. We have gigs in so many places we haven’t been before, so really looking forward to checking them out. Places like Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Portugal… Plus we have a few days off in Berlin which is going to be pretty good we think.

What should the kids expect at a Yolanda Be Cool gig? LOTS OF PARTY TECH!!!!!
