Originally released in the heady days of 2009, ‘Shooting Stars’ by Aussie electronic duo Bag Raiders, is considered by many of my generation as the soundtrack to the debaucherous, vodka-Red-Bull fuelled, delinquencies of early 20-something life.
What I’m trying to say is if you didn’t finger someone/get fingered by someone in a dimly-lit nightclub backroom whilst ‘Shooting Stars’ pumped aggressively out of a nearby speaker, you’re probs not a Gen Y Australian and I’m very disappointed in you.
Cut to eight years later though and the shimmery slice of dance-floor fun is back in the limelight, due to, yep, you guessed it, god damn mother-fucking MEMES son!
Whilst only recently blowing up in the past week, the birth of the ‘Shooting Stars‘ meme, which, as far as I can tell literally just pairs the song’s drop to whacked-out montages of people falling/flying through the air, can actually be traced back to, of all fucking things, the Harambe meme.
Jesus Christ I’m glad that era is over tbh.
Realising the potential of combining the silky synths of Bag Raiders’ masterpiece with poorly rendered meme videos, the internet bloody well ran with it, with this viral vid released last month, really notching it up a gear and laying the groundwork for the current meme-course that we so happily dwell in:

As nature intended, ‘The Simpsons’ was obviously the next step in the meme-volution. Why is it also in Spanish? Shut up, that’s why.
So there you have it. The ‘Shooting Star‘ meme, in all it’s nonsensical, hyper-colour glory. It’s best not to think too hard on this one, friends, because really, at the end of the say, the REAL Shooting Star…. is you. Maybe, I don’t really know.
