Gotye Wins Triple J’s Hottest 100, Of Course

Congratulations to Gotye aka Wally De Backer who, as predicted by bookies, us, you and everyone, took out the number one spot in triple J’s Hottest 100 with his huge crossover single “Somebody That I Used To Know” featuring Kimbra.

Gotye’s aching blue valentine to break ups disguised in transformative power pop has racked up some serious accolades since its release. These include but are not limited to:
The highest-selling Australian song of 2011
2011 Album Of The Year at triple J’s J Awards
Three ARIA Awards including Single of the Year

We spoke to Wally around six months ago (pre world domination) and he dissected the song – his first ever charting single!? – and revealed that it almost was left on the cutting room floor. Nice save, Wally.

The top ten from this year’s Hottest 100 demonstrated that triple j listeners “love Australian music” just as much as the station does, because seven of those songs were by Australian artists. Here is the numbers that rounded out the list. For the full 100 head over to the triple j website.
