Get Ready To Hoedown: HBO Released An EP Of ‘Westworld’ Honky-Tonk Covers

I was sceptical of ‘Westworld‘ at first. I love the original movie but it is basically just ‘Jurassic Park‘ with robot cowboys and it is goofy as all hell. The ads for the TV show made it look like it was going to be all serious and sexy and violent and, well, HBO-y – which it is, and it totally rules.
Between Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins giving the performances of their lives, Thandy Newton playing an unbelievably erotic badass, some wildly cool sci-fi visuals and all the good mystery of ‘Lost‘ without the shitty bits (yet), this might well be my favourite TV show of the last few years.
Frankly I have absolutely no idea what’s going on in the show, but I’m enjoying all of the little details – like the dope honky-tonk covers of weird alternative (mostly) songs they chucked in for a laugh.
I very nearly laughed out loud when I realised the piano song in the first episode was Soundgarden‘s ‘Black Hole Sun‘, and was equally delighted when they did The Cure‘s ‘A Forest‘ (my favourite Cure song! what a world).
If you’re hankering to hear those hits on your daily commute, you’re in luck: HBO have released a mini EP, including those tracks and the covers of Radiohead‘s ‘No Surprises‘ and the Rolling Stones‘ ‘Paint It Black‘ – there’s also the ‘Westworld‘ theme song if you’re the sort of person who listens to theme songs for fun.
You can grab it right here on iTunes.
