Camp Cope’s Georgia Maq Just Dropped A Surprise Solo Record Full Of Bass-Heavy Bops

Putting down the guitar for a hot second and instead messing around with synths, thumping bass beats, and Garageband, Georgia Maq has surprised us all with her first full-length solo record, Pleaser.

It’s a shift away from the guitar-fuelled punk and noodly acoustic we’ve come to expect with Georgia’s soaring, gutsy vocals over the last few years, but moving into a synth-charged, bassy pop corner of the room has given Maq the chance to explore the range and technique she can hit with her vocals and experiment a bit more at her own pace.

Pleaser is a tight eight-track record, but Georgia Maq takes no time in giving a one-two punch of creating an atmosphere that feels like you’re waist-deep in the sticky sweat of an indie club night at 2am with gut-busters of the different kinds of all-consuming love we’ll all endure; one-way crushes, abandoned love, loving yourself, the whole spectrum.

Each track is both a lot on the heart and the head, but God it’d be good music to work out to at the gym. Which, knowing Georgia, is something she’d love to have her music soundtrack.

Speaking with The Fader, Georgia Maq talked about how working with vocal coaches, an old high school friend in Darcy Baylis, and a label mate on Run For Cover records Katie Dey, helped her find her voice, instead of resting on the laurels of getting shouty.

“It’s definitely made me think about melodies more, and what I can do with my voice,” Georgia said.

“Instead of just yelling, I’m trying to actually make something that sounds beautiful to me. There’s no angry screaming about anything anymore.”

The record is out now on all your beloved streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, and physical copies of the album are due to land on February 14, 2020 (the love day.)

Check it out below, and happy Friday folks.
