As part of his ongoing efforts to remind us he’s no longer the proud wearer of a purity ring but a grown man with pubes, erstwhile fedora owner Nick Jonas has been announced as the headline performer at the annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party.
If that doesn’t come across as an immediately natural fit, consider the following. An integral part of his debut solo self-titled album promotional strategy has been to literally shed at times his once chaste image in favour of one that involves a great deal of bulking and shredding, lubricating and crotch grabbing for suggestive editorials and more adult acting roles alike.
Depending on where you fall on the cynicism/optimism spectrum, it’s either great marketing, an honest extension of the Nick Jonas personal brand or straight-up [pun intended] queerbaiting – or pandering to the pink dollar. Jonas will appear on the party lineup alongside the Scissor Sisters‘ Jake Shears, Jessica Mauboy and drag icons Destiny Haz Arrived and Courtney Act amongst dozens of others.
