Australians all let us rejoice because we are young and free and our independent musicians are once again getting the recognition they deserve, as the Australian Independent Record Labels Association has today announced the nominees for the eighth annual Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards.
Sydney producer and world-beater Flume has surprised no-one by racking up a table topping 5 nominations, but psych-dance group Jagwar Ma are hot on his tail, going head to head with the electronic boy wonder in all his categories, including the major Best Independent Artist and Best Independent Album awards, as well as Best Independent Single Or EP, Best Independent Dance, Electronica Album and Best Independent Dance, Electronica or Club Single. Both artists are signed to the label Future Classic, who must be tickled pink with all the (well deserved) attention their boys are getting.
Two piece Big Scary landed 3 nominations off the back of their wonderful second album Not Art, while bright-eyed indie rockers Dick Diver, singer/songwriter/boy version of heart throb Vance Joy, singer/songwriter/girl version of heart throb Courtney Barnett, hip hopper Seth Sentry, and Independent Music Awards alumni The Drones scored two nominations each.
The awards ceremony will be held in Melbourne in October, and feature performances from nominees Big Scary, Seth Sentry and RÜFÜS, as well as Archie Roach, Violent Soho and Saskwatch. Also, there’ll be beers. Loads and loads of beers.
The full list of nominations is below along with a bonus Flume interview.
