It’s Aus Music month at Triple J and as per tradition, their first round of J Award nominees have been announced. Considered a pretty big deal in the industry the “Australian Album of the Year is selected for being an outstanding musical work of art; for its creativity, musicianship and its contribution to Australian music.”

The 2012 J Award Australian Album of the Year nominees (first round) are:

Alpine A Is For Alpine
Ball Park Music Museum
Hermitude Hyper Paradise
The Rubens The Rubens
Tame Impala Lonerism

The remainder of the field will be announced Nov 15.

Previous winners of the award reads like a modern Australian music royalty roll call with Wolfmother (2005), Hilltop Hoods (2006), The Panics (2007), The Presets (2008), Sarah Blasko (2009), Tame Impala (2010) and Gotye (2011) scoring the prestigious gongs.

Pedestrian Tip: It will be a pretty close tussle between Tame Impala and Hermitude at this stage.

Video Of The Year will be a pretty hotly contest category. Nominations include:

Gotye – Easy Way Out

Alpine – Hands

Flight Facilities – Foreign Language

Kirin J Callinan – War II War

Bertie Blackman – Boy

Hilltop Hoods – Rattling the Keys to the Kingdom

Pedestrian Tip: Kirin J Callinan gif/horror mash is creepy as shit but Gotye has proven he doesn’t need to get Kimbra starkers in order to bang out a clever clip.

The 2012 J Award Unearthed Artist of the Year nominees are:
Flume
The Rubens
Chance Waters
Kingswood
Thelma Plum

Pedestrian Tip:
Flume be blowin’ up!
