David Bowie’s 1st Ever Recording Found In An Old Bread Basket During A Move

Looking for a priceless audio recording of one of the world’s greatest musicians to auction off at incredible profit? Consider checking your fruit bowl or your grocery bag cupboard or something. David Bowie‘s first ever demo track – from all the way back in 1963 – has been discovered in an old bread basket, and is expected to fetch about $17,000 at auction.

Recorded when Bowie was just 16 years old, the performance of I Never Dreamed was backed by his first band  The Konrads. Evidently, the record company wasn’t keen on it.

According to The Guardian, the tape was found by Konrads drummer David Hadfield, who was also the band’s manager. He found it stashed in the old bread basket when he was moving home along with a bunch of photographs, booking forms and other bric-a-brac which are probably worth more individually than anything you have ever owned.

Here’s Hadfield:

We had decided that we would do a couple of guitar instrumentals and one original song. I chose I Never Dreamed as it was the strongest, the other two were a bit weak. I also decided that David was the best person to sing it and give the right interpretation. So this became the very first recording of David Jones singing 55 years ago.

(David Jones was Bowie’s original nom-de-plume before he changed it to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees.)

Anyway, if you’re in the market for a piece of musical history, and have at least 17 large to spare, Hadfield’s collection is being flogged off by Omega Auctions.
