Courtney Barnett Is Coming Home For Next Month’s Installment Of MTV Unplugged Melbourne

The fifth instalment of MTV Unplugged Melbourne is locked in, and Melb’s own singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett has been announced as the next lucky bugger to take the stage and tackle the challenge of stripping back her huge tracks for the night.

Following on from bloody stunning performances by DMA’sAmy Shark, The Reubens, and Gang Of Youths (remember all those roses?!) CB is bringing her thoroughly Aussie twang to her first-ever run at Unplugged.

Courtney Barnett is set to go acoustic at Howler in Brunswick on October 22, creating a very special and super-intimate vibe in the heart of the inner north. It’s not quite Depreston, but it’s close enough.

MTV Unplugged is something that Courtney grew up with at home and has fond memories of watching the iconic  Nirvana and Eric Clapton sets on repeat as a kid.

“In my house growing up we had Nirvana Unplugged and Clapton Unplugged on repeat,” she said.

“I discovered a whole new world of music through the cover songs.”

Courtney said she’s excited to take the challenge head-on, and has been reworking and rearranging some of her biggest songs from Tell Me How You Really FeelSometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit as well as her older stuff.

“It’s been fun to re-arrange my songs and sometimes revisit where they started as demos. Gonna try a few new things,” Courtney said.

As well as her band, Courtney Barnett apparently has a few guests up her sleeve, and I’m very intrigued by that. Who could it be? She’s going on Dad’s Big Gravy Tour™ this year so what if it’s Paul Kelly? What if the cover she does is ‘How To Make Gravy’ and she does it WITH Paul Kelly? Hoo boy.

Or maybe Georgia Maq from Camp Cope is gunna step out again on vocals? Or what about her best mate Kurt Vile? Courtney’s personal Rolodez is probably teeming with exceptional talent and massive names, and goddammit I wanna know who the mystery guest is.

If you wanna try and pull up a piece of carpet at the show next month, head along to the MTV website to suss out the deets. And if you can’t make it, the whole show will be on Foxtel, MTV.com.au and Fetch in November.
