Want something that’ll make this day feel a little lighter and brighter, whether it’s day 56 or 201 in lockdown? Sure you do. And boy do I have just the thing: Client Liaison’s truly deee-liteful run at a phenomenally huge 90s bop for Like A Version.
The lads stepped into the Triple J studios this week to lay down an absolute barnburner, a real Friday energies treat. Groove Is In The Heart by Deee-Lite.
It’s possibly the one song to include a slide whistle outside of a Weird Al Yankovic polka power track, and the one track that turns a casual knockoffs into a full blown dance floor burn up (believe me, I’ve bared witness to this multiple times).
This chills that this spills up my back, my god. Monty hitting those high notes. The FLUTE. Fuck me rigid this Like A Version from Client Liaison is so bloody good.
It feels like it’s been a hot minute since Friday covers that have really stopped me in my tracks, and this one has come at a really crucial time when I feel like we’re collectively at a breaking point. While it’s still a minute until Client Liaison’s new album Divine Intervention drops on October 1st, this is enough to keep me grooving along ’til then.
Upon dropping this one into the wider work chats this morning, it was largely agreed that a carefree, groovy bop was sorely needed after what feels like months and months of just real bleak shit. And it’s not a wrong assessment, we do need these moments where there’s a deep urge to just go and let all the pent-up energy out.
Fuck it, wiggle around in your lounge room, go for a run in the rain, throw hands in the kitchen at thin air, put this stellar cover from Client Liaison on repeat and sing it at the top of your lungs in the shower. We all deserve a moment of true groove in our hearts in times where it feels like the groove has well and truly left us.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play it again.
