Christmas on Mars with The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips can’t be accused of conventionality. From their cathartic live show to concept albums about pink robots Wayne Coyne and co sure have “quirky” on lock…

This is perhaps most evident in the long delayed Lips’ feature film debut “Christmas On Mars”. A little background on the flick: “The long awaited feature film by the Flaming Lips is set in outer space on the surface of Mars. The double failures of a clunky old oxygen generator and an exotic but finicky gravity control pod have conspired to weaken the resolve and psychological judgment of the crew and the film’s protagonist Major Syrtis. This means he has horrific hallucinations that are centered around the artificial birth of the Christmas baby. An alien super-being arrives and with his otherworldly powers fixes the oxygen generator but it’s the station’s genius mechanic who fixes the gravity problem.”

Hmm. Eat much acid guys?

Anyone who’s seen the Flaming Lips doco “Fearless Freaks” knows there’s a much darker side to the band than their most notable hit “Do You Realise?” would have you believe. I can only hope the film is as weird as the trailer…
