Chris Cornell, the lead singer of grunge icons Soundgarden and supergroup Audioslave, has died suddenly at age 52.
His representative Brian Bumbery told the Associated Press that Cornell died in Detroit on Wednesday night, calling it “sudden and unexpected“, and saying Cornell’s family were shocked.

He was scheduled to play the Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, Ohio tonight.
Cornell was part of the original grunge movement in Seattle in the 1990s thanks to his band Soundgarden, which was the first grunge band to sign with a major label.
He formed Audioslave in 2001 with Rage Against The Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk.
In his statement, Bumbery said that Cornell’s family and partner were working with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. Our thoughts are with his family.
