It was confirmed today that Sir George Martin, legendary producer and the man regarded as ‘the fifth Beatle’ had passed away at age 90.
Martin had a bloody lot to do with the music you no doubt engage with today – he’s the man who signed The Beatles, when every major label had turned them down. And pretty much every artist alive is, in some way, inspired by the Beatles.
Martin’s career spanned over 50 years, and he worked on over 700 records. He produced music from Celine Dion, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Kenny Rogers, and he produced Elton John‘s tribute song following the death of Princess Diana, ‘Candle in the Wind’.
His management made a statement confirming Martin’s passing, but did not confirm how.
Ringo Starr tweeted his respect for the producer:
God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family love Ringo and Barbara George will be missed xxx ?????????
