Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson Are Getting Sued Yet Again Over ‘Uptown Funk’

You may have glanced at the above headline and assumed it was old news because Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson have already been sued a number of times over their fiendishly catchy track ‘Uptown Funk‘, but nope, it’s happening yet again. This week, the members of 1970s rap group The Sequence announced that they are seeking damages from the pair over similarities between the track and their own 1979 single ‘Funk You Up‘.

Back in 2015, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson reached a settlement with the members of the Gap Band over similarities between ‘Uptown Funk’ and their classic track ‘Oops Upside Your Head‘, with the plaintiffs eventually being awarded a 17% share in songwriting royalties. The pair have since dealt with further claims from groups like Zapp and Collage, who claimed they too had been ripped off by the hit song.

Cheryl Cook, Gwendolyn Chisolm and Angie Brown Stone of The Sequence announced this week that they are seeking monetary damages from Ronson and Mars, citing “significant and substantially similar compositional elements” between the two tracks.

Amateur musicologists can go ahead and compare the two below:

‘Uptown Funk’ was the 13th ever song to be recognised with diamond status by the Recording Industry Association of America, signifying sales of more than 10 million.

At its peak, the song earned an estimated $100,000 per week from Spotify streams alone, and its estimated sales, including equivalent units, are understood to be well over 20 million.
