Belle And Sebastian Drove Off & Left Their Drummer In His Pyjamas At Walmart

Drummers are meant to keep the rhythm in a band, and as such are vitally important members of any music outfit. So it’s probably for the best if you don’t forget that they exist, and drive off in your tour bus, leaving them behind at a Walmart.

This is exactly what happened to Scottish band Belle and Sebastian, who are currently on tour in America, when they were making their way to a gig in St. Paul, Minnesota. In the early hours, frontman Stuart Murdoch sent an embarrassed tweet after realising the bus had driven off without drummer Richard Colburn, leaving him sitting in his pyjamas in the store.

Later, when speaking to a radio station in Minnesota, Murdoch clarified that the two happily waved at each other as he was coming out of the Walmart while Colburn was heading in, but the system to track band members then broke down. “I mean, there used to be a system. There used to be a system, but because we all have mobile phones these days, everybody’s got a little bit blasé about it.”

Unfortunately Colburn had left his phone on the bus, clutching only a credit card, and sat in Walmart for four hours waiting for his band’s return, only to eventually give up and check into a hotel for the night. The next day, thanks to some help from friends, Colburn was on his way.

With the addition of string players, the large band can reach up to 12 or 13 people that need to be wrangled, and after Colburn was lost, they decided it might be best to put the safeguards back in place to stop this happening again.

We wonder if Colburn insisted the band play their song ‘The State I Am In‘ at the gig he only just made.
