Aussie music is better than it’s ever been. And by that we mean a larger and more diverse group of people are making it, tracks can easily get direct to the ears of potentials fans via The Internet™ and we’re all the best and our island is full of talented legends.
We’ve previously rounded up young Australian fashion icons to smother all over your radar and now we’re on to music. This is by no means an exhaustive list and we can guarantee you that there are many other beatmakers who you should also be listening out for – but it does include a playlist!
What follows is, however, definitive proof that the future of sounds down under is shining bright like a diam’un.
CAIRNS
Hannah Karydas has been kicking around for a while now – she started writing music at age 10 and performed on stage for the first time at Cairns Has Got Talent, which looks like a great time:
Since those days she’s made her own video for breakout single ‘Zen,‘ supported up-and-comers Sky Ferreira and Courtney Barnett on their national tours and played Laneway. Her trajectory since that first release can be seen here:
SLUM SOCIABLE |
MELBOURNE
The boys have been getting around playing a Sugar Mountain here and a Spectrum Playground there and have done some work in the studio with Tom Iansek of Big Scary and #1 Dads fame, but remain elusive i.e. we can’t find their names anywhere. However, the duo are officially producers to watch based on the strength of their only release so far and solid personal brand:
BAD DREEMS | ADELAIDE
HOPIUM |
MELBOURNE
Another Melbourne duo, Hopium, are responsible for ‘Dreamers’ which features guest vocals by Phoebe Lou of Unearthed High alumni Snakadaktal. And now:
BANOFFEE |
MELBOURNE
Wherever she goes, the happy ears and food puns follow.
The singer-songwriter Martha Brown certainly knows her way around a synth and despite having had to recently cancel a European tour, the gal with ~pop and R’n’B vibes~ out her undoubtedly great wazoo, will definitely be coming to a stage in an eyeline near you.
MOSES GUNN COLLECTIVE |
BRISBANE
Despite their awe-inspiring trip Back Into The Womb, the kids of Moses’ gun-themed collective are going in a decidedly forward direction. Their much anticipated debut album ‘Mercy Mountain’ is expected later this year – prepare your wombs.
MT WARNING |
SHEPPARTON
Let this be a warning to you, something something shoehorn.
He’s played Splendour, Laneway, SXSW, Field Day in the UK and supported the likes of Circa Waves, The Temper Trap and Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros.
After growing up in Shepparton Mikey Bee has since moved to Byron, closer to the Mount Warning from whence came his name. All the better to be surrounded by chill and to use as a jumping-off point to tour the world!
ART OF SLEEPING |
BRISBANE
Basically,
I can make a bikini made out of 3 day old pizza look good. Unique skillz

THE PINHEADS |
ILLAWARRA
Their debut EP ‘I Wanna Be A Girl‘ is on its way in July but basically:
MATHAS |
PERTH
To quote Gemma Pike of triple J, “it is no secret that Mathas is one of the most thoughtful and skilled lyricists in Australia.”
REMI | MELBOURNE
ALLDAY | ADELAIDE
Apart from doing his own stuff and featuring on tracks with mates, Allday recently took on Like a Version with Asta and nailed it to the fucking wall.

CATLIPS | PERTH
PANAMA | SYDNEY
Panama have taken on BBC Radio 1, Hottest 100, Hype Machine charts, European and US tours and consistently come out on top. Now Jarrah McCleary and Tim Commandeur, have a new release June 5th.
COLLARBONES | ADELAIDE
Apart from being a fkn qt, Gina subscribes to the “Ausasia new wave” lifestyle and is all about that ~karaoke chic~.
TKAY MAIDZA | ADELAIDE
It goes without saying that Tkay goes off. If you’re looking for one of our country’s best young guns, look no further:
MANSIONAIR | SYDNEY

FEKI | BRISBANE

MOTEZ| ADELAIDE
