The Mint Zapped A Bunch Of 45th Anniversary AC/DC Coins With 3,500,000 Volts

If you just so happen to be both a massive fan of AC/DC and a passionate collectable coin enthusiast, you will be absolutely ecstatic about the news I am about to deliver to you: the Royal Australian Mint just released a bunch of special edition AC/DC coins.

If that’s not enough to rev your engine (and, surely, it should be) they went one step further: they zapped some of the fuckers with 3,500,000 volts of (man-made) lightning. Ten of the 30,000 special edition 50 cent pieces have been electrocuted, and they will be randomly distributed among the coins sold through the Mint’s online store and contact centre.

In a press release, Royal Australian Mint CEO Ross MacDiarmid sounded about as excited about the coins as you would expect the CEO of a mint to sound: “We weren’t sure what effect the lightning would have on the coins, but we discovered that because the coins are such excellent conductors of electricity, the lightning’s mark is only visible under magnification.

Striking these ten coins with lightning adds a uniquely AC/DC element to this release,” he said. “To help the ten lucky customers identify their ‘Thunderstruck’ coins, we have added unique frosting to the coin’s AC/DC logo.

That’s very helpful Ross, thank you.

In addition that schmick 50 cent piece, the mint also released a pick-shaped (read: triangular) nickel-plated $5 coin, which I assume has to be treated as legal tender? I’m not a coin expert.

The coins are to celebrate the band’s 45th anniversary, I’m sure their longevity and the fact that they are now having coins made by the Royal Australian Mint is as much of a surprise to them as it is to everyone else.

If you want to spend $15 on a 50 cent coin (and who wouldn’t), you can do so right here. When I went to check, the Mint website had slowed to a crawl, giving a very strong impression that the website had been inundated with an abundance of coin fans, but it could also just be shit government infrastructure.
