5 Seconds Of Summer have come swinging back into 2019 after a ‘yuge year last year with a feature on a Chainsmokers single, and now their own newest single ‘Easier‘, and I’m very happy to report that it is a hell of a bop. A banger. A tried and true slapper.

If you’ve not yet come around to 5SOS, I daresay this might be the track that will make you prick your ears up. For me, it was last year’s ‘Youngblood‘ that made me stop and think “now wait a damn minute, this is a fuckin’ tune” and now I unashamedly sing it to myself whenever it gets stuck in my head.
Anyway, back to ‘Easier‘. It’s the first taste of the band’s incoming fourth studio album (and their first with Interscope Records) and they’ve pegged it as the most confident they’ve been with their music and the shift toward a darker, edgier pop route has the boys from Sydney saying that this next era of 5SOS is going to be their “best yet.”
Leaning into a gritter, bass-heavy pop has proven to be wildly successful for Billie Eilish (I mean, look at ‘Bad Guy‘ and tell me that elements of industrial and baby goth aren’t coming through strong this year) so it’ll be interesting to see if the rest of the album explores the tougher side of the genre.

The video for ‘Easier‘ is, for lack of a better term, extremely horny. Like, this is a transmission straight from Horny Jail.
Visually leaning in on the four elements – wind, water, earth, and fire – it’s raw and carnal and the band definitely wants to let everyone know that they absolutely fuck. 5SOS are grown up and they’re not those sweet boys-next-door anymore.
