The cream of Sydney’s creative elite assembled last night to celebrate themselves, their projects and the city they helped improve at FBi Radio’s fifth annual Sydney Music, Art and Culture (SMAC) at Carriageworks.
Those recognised for staving off cultural cardiac arrest by keeping the city’s creative heart beating in 2013 included Newtown bar and burger joint Mary’s, Surry Hills nostalgia merchants Golden Age Cinema, judgement free DIY music festival Secret Garden and Blue Mountains psych-rock troupe, Cloud Control.
Other winners included civil engineer turned visual artist Mike Hewson and Sydney acts The Preatures, Elizabeth Rose and Sarah Blasko, while the SMAC of the Year, bestowed each year upon the most dynamic cultural legend in the city, went to Lisa Havilah, “curator, community-builder and taste-maker”, responsible for investing the vision, time and energy required to rejuvenate places like the Campbelltown Arts Centre and Carriageworks into accessible spaces where amazing things can happen. And it did again last night.
