2003 Was The Greatest Year In Music, Do Not @ Us

So, today I saw a story on Teen Vogue about how it’s been 15 (!!!) years since Hilary Duff‘s ‘So Yesterday’ – an iconic track that was absolutely my anthem as a teen, even though I had never even looked a boy in the eyes, let alone had someone who could be ‘so yesterday’.

Anyway, it led me to a Wikipedia black hole of billboard charts for 2003 and guys. 2003. It was absolutely the best year of music, ever.

OKAY PROBABLY NOT EVER I’m sure there was some time in the ’70s or ’60s. But for OUR generation? It’s 2003. Hands down. The end. No arguments.

Want more proof/some YouTube clips to waste the last hour of your day on? You are W E L C O M E.

DELTA GOODREM – BORN TO TRY

Hi it’s me, your #1 Delta apologist. I bloody LOVE Delta. Born To Try was an epic album, the title track was an epic song, it was just all epicness, all the time. She had not one, but FOUR songs in the top 20 ARIA singles chart for 2003, by the way. Do you reckon she’s rich? I think she’s rich.

EMINEM – LOSE YOURSELF

Here’s a completely untrue fact, probably – this was Eminem’s big, defining career moment. I remember vaguely that ‘My Name Is’ came before this but I feel like it wasn’t as widely-received as Lose Yourself. IDK, whatever. I’m not the Music Editor, guys! I’m just here to give you fun songs to listen to and some funny information that’s usually incorrect!

ALL I HAVE – JENNIFER LOPEZ FT. LL COOL J

FUUUUCK GUYS this is such an underrated J.LO track, and also where has L.L Cool J gone, and also is she winter wonderland goals in this film clip or what.

IN DA CLUB – 50 CENT

Honestly how can you argue that any other year in the last 20 is ANYTHING when ‘In Da Club’ came out in 2003.

BRING ME TO LIFE – EVANESCENCE

If you didn’t put on a LOT of black eyeliner and lip sync this song into your bedroom mirror we can’t be friends.

STOLE – KELLY ROWLAND

SHITTTTT YOU GUYS! This song is so emotional. I forgot it existed but now it’s playing on loop in the office bc I am the worst.

DILEMMA – NELLY FT. KELLY ROWLAND

I’m going to say right now that a lot of these songs say on YouTube that they were released in 2002, but I am going off the ARIA Singles Charts for the end of 2003, and that is the LAW, folks. I don’t care about anything else. ANYWAY how could we forget the music clip that involved Kelly trying to text Nelly using Microsoft Excel?

HEY SEXY LADY – SHAGGY

Shaggy had a ’00s TIME, didn’t he? This is one of his most underrated tunes, and the one you will see me put on via the AUX at any/all house parties I’m in attendance at.

STUCK – STACIE ORRICO

Guys I’m pretty sure Stacie Orrico was/ended up being a born-again Christian, and I know this bc all my formative teen years were spent in a Hillsong-esque church and that is all we will say about THAT.

SK8R BOI – AVRIL LAVINGNE

I was skeptical about this having been released in 2003 but ARIA Charts, they don’t lie (I think). Anyway, fuck ‘Complicated’, Sk8r Boi has numbers in the title AND it had a really emotional plot line about lost love under those guitar riffs.

SATISFACTION – BENNY BENASSI

Okay I lied – I won’t be putting on ‘Hey Sexy Lady’ at any/all house parties, I’ll be putting on this fucking banger/floor filler. Honestly everyone becomes a dancing worm (think lots of body rolling and gyrating) as soon as that beat drops. Especially me, who you will find dry humping the stair banister.

NUMB – LINKIN PARK

We were REALLY, REALLY feeling the emotions in 2003, guys.

BOYS OF SUMMER – DJ SAMMY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDCACkes9to

Okay, so the ’00s had a lot of badly-redone old tunes, but this was a good reboot in that so-terrible-it’s-actually-amazing way.

RISE UP – AUSTRALIAN IDOL FINALISTS

LOL at Andrew G going “the message boards are going to light up after this performance”. THE MESSAGE BOARDS. Anyway that actually isn’t ‘Rise Up’ it’s just the best clip I’ve found all day on the internet. This is ‘Rise Up’, if you want to listen to the GREATEST COLLAB TUNE EVER.

RIGHT THURR – CHINGY

Fuck guys, I need to be in the club right now. “The club” being my bedroom with earphones in and a 2003 playlist blasting.

SLOW – KYLIE MINOGUE

Kylie Minogue is better than Madonna about making herself relevant in every single era, there I said it.

NAUGHTY GIRL – HOLLY VALANCE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9p54rADMgw

This was such a good bop, guys. I don’t entirely understand what she did to be naughty (was she good? I think she did a bad thing like cheat) but it’s irrelevant bc it’s dreamy, and I’ve got it on repeat now.

JENNY FROM THE BLOCK – JENNIFER LOPEZ

No explanation needed.

BEAUTIFUL – CHRISTINA AGUILERA

This is one of those songs that will still be relevant in 2028, let alone 2018.

CRAZY IN LOVE – BEYONCE

CRAZY IN FUCKING LOVE CAME OUT IN 2003, GUYS. Why am I still trying to convince you?

THE REIGN – JA RULE

I still have no idea if they’re saying “I think the rain is coming down, I think the rain is calling Murder” bc Murder Inc (MUUUURDA EEEIIIINK, amirite). I don’t entirely care, either.

ANGEL – AMANDA PEREZ

I told you we had a lot of feelings in 2003.

WORK IT – MISSY ELLIOTT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UODX_pYpVxk

Who learnt that the second part of the chorus was just the first part backward like, last month? (Me.)

SHUT UP – BLACK EYED PEAS

‘Where Is The Love’ ranked higher, but this tune is better and it’s MY list and I can do what I WANT. Where Is The Love was boring, there I said it.
