After the year that shall not be named, I for one am looking forward to hitting the road and seeing more of our beautiful country, passport-free.
Instead of being sad that I can’t take off for a snowy Christmas in another country, I’ll be actively counting my blessings. Those blessings being beaches that aren’t as packed as usual and open borders that mean we can finally roam around our own backyard.
And if you, like me, are finding yourself unemployed smack dab in the middle of summer, we have a very fun solution. Two words: working holiday.
You may have thought a gap year was off the cards for 2021, but no mates. It’s actually more on than ever, with a heap of jobs available in the tourism industry in Queensland — and they’re just waiting for you to nab them.
Ahead, we break down exactly how you can celebrate an endless summer by branching out to live and work in, frankly, one of the most idyllic places on earth.
What jobs are we talking about?
Many of the jobs available are filling the gaps in the tourism industry for summer. For example, being a waiter is even better when done in Noosa, where you can toss on your swimmers at the end of the day and explore pristine coves. Joining a working farm in the outback is the beginning of basically every romance novel ever, and scoring a gig on a boat in the Whitsundays sounds like a straight-up dream.
Take advantage of sweet transport deals
With Queensland officially open for summer, there are some incredible opportunities for saving on travel around the state. For starters, Greyhound is slinging $399 bus tickets that last for 90 days and allow you to travel around the entire state between shifts.
Next, Queensland Rail has this little thing called a Regional Workforce Fare, which gives you a 60% discount on their economy fares (available for purchase from 9 December 2020 until 31 January 2021, for travel up to 30 April 2021).
A final note on why you’d be silly not to do it
This year has been rough for *checks notes* everyone. Some of you have missed graduations, formals, first days of school (last days of school) and don’t even get me started on cancelled birthday celebrations.
