Aussie Coins Are Getting A Fresh New Portrait Of Queen Liz From Next Year

We’re getting some new coins, folks. Well, they’re not so much a radical redesign like the new notes are, but our coins will soon feature a brand new picture of Queen Liz II, showing her neckline and shoulders instead of just her bonce.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove unveiled the new portrait of big Liz today at the Royal Mint in Canberra, which was designed by a UK engraver from the British Royal Mint named Jody Clark. You can expect to see fresh Liz and her shoulders on your coins from next year.

“This new effigy will be a new image for a new era, continuing to tell the story of a reign and lifetime,” Cosgrove said of the portrait, which marks the sixth new design since Lizzy took the throne in 1952. Her current image on Aussie coins was introduced in 1998.

The new image is also the first since 1966 to show off Liz’s shoulders and neckline, featuring a rather snazzy Victorian coronation necklace. Impressive bling, Lizzy.

“We’ve now got her shoulders appearing and the Victorian coronation necklace, it’s a larger portrait and one that hopefully continues to reflect her wonderful looks,” Royal Australian Mint CEO, Ross McDermott, told 3AW.

You can check out the new portrait below, compared to the current portrait below that.
