Whether you’re all about the fashion life or content with a capsule wardrobe, there’s one thing we can all (probably) agree on. When it comes to wardrobe basics, spending that bit extra for something that fits like it was made for you is never a bad idea. While many of us scream internally when we’re faced with the price tag on, say, a pair of super trend-borne flared jeans, when it comes to a plain white tee, the idea of throwing down major cash seems less insane.
Obviously this is because we can envision clearly how often we will wear this item, whereas trends come and go – those embroidered mom jeans could be old news by August, but that navy silk slip dress’ll be wearable for years if you play your cards right.
We asked the Aussies with the most coveted wardrobes around where they’re buying their beautiful basics from, so we can get there first and sell ’em out. Suckers.
TALISA SUTTON
“For t-shirts, I love Bassike, Acne and COS. The latter I also love for easy shirting and knitwear.
One of my favourite online destinations is The UNDONE – they have the perfect curation of pieces for those that lean towards a minimal, effortless wardrobe. They always have amazing camis, slip dresses and layering pieces.”
BROOKE TESTONI
“The brands I turn to for basics would be Organic by John Patrick, Baserange and Viktoria and Woods.”
NORA CHAN
“Assembly Label (their Everyday Tee is a favourite of mine), Nude Lucy, Arthur Apparel, and Nice Martin. The UNDONE also has a great selection of wardrobe staples.”
CHLOE BRINKLOW
“Protagonist for slip dresses, camis and shirts. Uniqlo for cashmere sweaters – I size up and wear them oversized. Bassike for tees, long sleeve shirts and trackies. Matin (an Aussie brand) for silk camis. Wolford for body suits.
I love the fit of PAIGE jeans and the look of vintage Levi’s, I usually stock up on them at thrift shops in the East Village when I am visiting NYC.”
ELEANOR PENDLETON
“The UNDONE is my go-to for black, white, grey and denim basics. Founders Sara Donaldson & Georgia Martin have impeccable taste and curate some of the best wardrobe staples.”
ELLE FERGUSON & TASH SEFTON
“Zara always delivers, and it’s even better when on sale. I just got THE best camel trench for $39 in NYC. Also H&M is fabulous. We just stocked up on H&M while we were in the States. People ask us more about the clothes we wear from there than all our designer pieces! Their denim is so so good and fashion items are on point.”
NADIA BARTEL
“Assembly Label, Bonds, and Viktoria & Woods all have incredible basics in beautiful fabrics that don’t blow the bank.”
JESSIE BUSH
“I’m a big fan of COS for simple tees, well-made knits and quality winter coats.”
KAITY MODERN
“I would never
usually recommend synthetic materials for bags or shoes outside of leather, however Stella McCartney uses a great faux version that wears very similarly to the real deal. Her shoes are
actually some of my favourites in my wardrobe and often come at a very reasonable price
considering the designer label.”
